Beyond the Hearth: Meeting Our 4 Hectares

Every homestead has a moment when the dream expands—when it reaches beyond the cottage walls and into the land waiting quietly beyond.

While our first post introduced the cozy cottage that sparked our journey, the true work of Sage Hearth lies just past the doorstep—across 4 hectares of rolling paddocks and pockets of native bush.

This is our slice of New Zealand: green, full of promise… and full of fencing that needs doing (as Ben will happily confirm after a long day out fencing).

Why We Chose This Land

We didn’t choose Sage Hearth just for the charm of the old cottage. We chose it for the possibility woven through these paddocks—the chance to build a self-sufficient life shaped by nature, intention, and the simple work of our own hands.

From these fields, we hope to eventually grow:

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Herbs for our nature-focused wellness products
  • Feed and forage for our animals

This land is the future heartbeat of our homestead.

Where We Are Now

Right now, the work feels both daunting and exciting. There is so much to do, and yet each task brings us a little closer to the homestead we imagine.

At the moment, we’re focused on:

  • Clearing overgrown areas
  • Repairing old infrastructure
  • Rebuilding and extending fencing
  • Learning the land’s rhythms, quirks, and needs

Slowly and steadily, we’re shaping these fields into the foundation of what will one day become our small farm experience, workshop space, and retreat.

Learning as We Grow

Every day brings a new challenge and a new lesson—gentle reminders of what slow living really means. Progress happens one task at a time, one fence post at a time, one idea at a time.

And for all of it—the messy parts, the small wins, the long days—we’re grateful.

In the last month or two, we’ve been working on one of the biggest — and most noticeable — tasks at Sage Hearth Cottage: preparing the exterior for a fresh lease on life. Ben and I spent long hours after work and on weekends carefully waterblasting, scraping, sanding, and patching. The summer heat pressed down on us, exhaustion was constant, and the work was tough. We knew from the start that everything could not — and would not — be perfect. Still, we did our best with what we had, setting the stage for the transformation the cottage so clearly deserved. Silage, Storms, and a New Old Cottage The past few weeks at Sage Hearth have felt full — not loud or dramatic, just quietly demanding. The kind of weeks where everything seems to hinge on one job being finished before the next can begin, where the weather dictates the pace, and where small moments of humour and comfort carry you through. The First Silage Cut This season marked our first ever silage cut here, and we only had one paddock to do — but it was a critical one. That paddock sits at the bend of the L-shape of our land, and until it was cut, a surprising amount of work was on hold. Anything that needed to happen out the back required us to pass straight through it. Shearing sheep. Moving stock. Dealing with fallen branches and trees. The Real Reality of Renovation: Living in the Paint Chaos! We had to jump straight into the DIY revitalization—but we were already living here! This is the truth of DIY and hard work: painting the walls and ceilings (with multiple coats needed for the chalky old surfaces!) while still navigating boxes and furniture. It was absolute chaos, but totally necessary. We owe a huge debt to Ben’s parents, who came to help Ben tackle the main living rooms while I was working. We still have more rooms to paint, but they helped us get the essential spaces done—enough to create a fresh start. They helped cover everything in that peaceful sage colour—a shade we chose long before naming Sage Hearth! As soon as that paint was dry, it was time to put every last box and piece of borrowed furniture into place.
